It varies from state to state. I live in Missouri and it’s about $ 800 per child. I worked with a woman that adopted two boys after being their foster parent. The kicker with them was that they still got like $ 400 a month even after the adoption (which I didn’t understand), income tax credits, medicaid and help with school supplies. Then in general conversation when we spoke of our kids and familes she would say “I know I’d feel different about them, if they were mine” Ok, wasn’t that what the judge did when he granted the adoption?! Just had to share that heartwarming story.

The foster care reimbursement rate varies by state, age of child, and if there are any special needs (medical, emotional, etc.) It does not count as taxable income. In addition, foster children qualify for medical, WIC, school lunch and breakfast program. In my area, a portion of child care is covered and we get a clothing allowance twice a year.

In my experience, the reimbursement does not adequately cover the cost of caring for the child, so you should be prepared to spend some of your own money.

Here is a link where you can look up your state. The rates are in TABLE 1 starting on page 15. This report is mostly about how the rates should be increased to reflect the actual cost of having foster children in the home. This table does not show rates for special needs children.
